What is a Masquerade Party

In simple terms, guests arrive wearing ornate masks to hide their identity.

The event is typically held at night.  Partygoers normally dress to impress and create a high-class ambiance.  A masquerade party is a themed party in nature and decor fits the event.

Step one:  Choose the Party Themes:

Sure masquerade masks are the overall theme of the party, but you can narrow it down even further.

Ideas popular with guests include Mardi Gras, birthday, black and white, mask crafting, couples, family-friendly, lottery party, or the most popular New Year’s Eve.

Step Two: Select a Date:

The perfect date for any party at your home should be on a weekend when most participants are off work the following day.

It’s bound to be a late night so be respectful of those having to work the next day.

New Year is always the most festive time for a party at your home, but also think outside the box, Mardi Gras, July 4th, murder mystery or Halloween are also great.

Step Three: Invitations:

Invitations should be ordered several months before the event and mailed at least 6 weeks prior.  This allows those attending time to purchase masks and make plans for the event.  Especially important if your party is held as part of a holiday celebration.

I found inexpensive and unique party invitations on ETSY.   Hosts may wish to include a photo that gives attendees an idea of the theme.  Always include if you are hosting a family-friendly event or if guests need to make childcare arrangements.

Step Four: What Type Of Food To Serve:

When making a menu keep in mind guests will be wearing masks.  That being said, messy foods should be avoided.

Ultimately the rest is up to you.  Make this a full meal or my personal favorite is finger foods, sweet treats, appetizers, and fancy cocktails.

Step Five: Plan The Decor

Most masquerade balls are decorated to match the theme chosen.  You can go all out or be more budget-friendly.  Make sure music matches the overall theme of the party and should be kept low to allow friends to mingle.

For the host who wants to go all out, consider renting a photo booth to capture the moment and encourage Instagram shares.

A popular party trend is to create a unique background for friends and family to capture images specifically for social media feeds.

Step Six:  Have a Great Time and Stay Fluid

You’ve set the stage for the best masquerade party now it’s time to enjoy the evening.  It’s also important to understand that most guests will ditch the masks relatively early in the evening.

Often masks become uncomfortable and once the novelty has worn off guests will ditch them.

If you are planning a big reveal, do it earlier in the party.

Most Important?

Now that you have put together the perfect masquerade party – Have FUN!  We often put so much time and effort into planning and executing a great party that we forget to enjoy ourselves.
