This year has me thinking… Are holiday greeting cards a thing of the past?
I will be the first to admit that I have not sent out holiday cards for several years. I don’t know why I stopped this tradition, but I realized this year I am not alone. I remember years ago receiving so many holiday greeting cards that I could fill an entire archway. I spend hours of my day gathering addresses of friends and family. My hand got so tired from writing personal messages and letting everyone know about my year.
This year I received one greeting card from my Aunt.
Could it be that social media has replaced this time honored tradition or have we just become lazy. It’s so easy to send out personal messages online via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or email. It’s no longer necessary to spend the time or money on greeting cards and stamps. Yes, greeting cards are beautiful, but I can use my mobile phone to take an equally nice photo for free. I can write my own words expressing how I feel about the recipient. I can do all of this without leaving the comfort of my home and incurring an unnecessary expense. I can feel the judgment taking place now. I am sure I will receive responses on why greeting cards are still worth the time and effort. I certainly did appreciate the one card I received, but understand why others have chosen other means to express their holiday spirit.
If you ask me if greeting cards are a thing of the past… I will say yes. However, be sure there will be something posted on social media letting you know that I have been thinking of you over this holiday season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Finding Kathy Brown.
