How you can create happiness in your workplace with small gestures of kindness.
Often our jobs become stressful and at times overwhelming. Even if we love our job, there are days were each of us struggle to get through the day. Often it’s our co-workers that rise to the occasion and lift us up. I am so fortunate to work with people who do just that. So what makes for a happy work environment? Your first response may be the pay or the benefits, but I challenge that notion. Here is my list of the small gestures that make me smile.
How often do you say Hello? One of the first things I noticed about the company I work for is how friendly everyone was to each other. It doesn’t matter who you are or the job title you hold as you walk down the hall, people just say, Hello. This comment may seem silly, but I have worked in other companies were everyone walked around, heads down, and no one acknowledged each other. My challenge to you is to adopt this practice in your daily lives. Just wait to see how many of your co-workers smile and adopt this trait in themselves.
Lifting each other up.. I can’t even count how many times I have been uplifted by a co-worker. Last week for no reason at all, other than the normal stresses of life and work, everyone on my team received a hand written note. The note was beautifully hand written and sealed in an elegant envelope. Inside a personal message of hope and kindness. I just couldn’t help to be instantly moved. The idea that someone would take the time and put in the effort just to make someone else’s day floored me. It’s actually what got me thinking about writing this blog post. Special thanks to Synamon on this one…
How often do you express gratitude? No one gets to where they are in their careers without the help of others. When is the last time you thanked someone for their help? If you believe your success is all about you, then you’re deluding yourself. Recognize when someone has put in the extra effort for no other reason than to help you succeed and thank them.
Complements. The impact of saying ” you really look nice today” or “I love those shoes.” Think about the times where you have put in some extra effort to put your best self forward at work. The times you dressed to impress and felt good about yourself. I bet you felt great when you left the house. Now image someone out of the blue commented on it. How would it make you feel? We often keep those thoughts to ourselves, but why not just say it. I’m not saying it just has to be about appearance, it could be about other things too. “Wow! that was a great presentation today” or “I’m so proud of you for your promotion!”
These are just a few ways too create happiness in the workplace through small gestures… I challenge each of you to come up with your own or try one of these. Please comment on this post with other ways you have been made to smile at work. I would love to hear them….
