Steve and I love to take weekend adventures. Sometimes crazy and sometimes laid back. Our recent weekend excursion was to beautiful Murphy North Carolina. This was an easygoing, relaxing weekend with epic scenery to match the mood. Rolling mountains that could be seen for miles. Endless rivers and outdoor activities. River rafting for the novice to the true adventurer. Me and Steve being the novice… Oh and lets not forget they also have a Casino..
Where to stay. Lodging options are limited since you can blink and already be through the town. Steve and I are hotel snobs and are very particular about where we lay our heads down. I would recommend the Hampton Inn Murphy NC. It’s extremely clean. The staff is friendly and they do have an average hotel style pool.
What to do. For the more adventurous try Ocoee White Water Rafting. If you still want to have fun but are unsure if rafting is for you try rafting on the Nantahala River. Even if you decide not to river raft. Take the beautiful ride along the Nantahala River. There are plenty of places to stop along the way. Romantic roadside pull overs with tables along the river. Watch as kayakers and rafters pass by. It’s one of the most peaceful places you’ll ever visit.
There are two Casinos, one in Murphy and one forty minutes down the road. The better of the two is Harrah’s Cherokee. This is a full size Casino with all the bells and whistles. Great food and entertainment. Large gaming area and full resort style pool. If you’d rather stay in Murphy then you can go to Harrah’s River Valley Casino. The Casino is relatively new and small. If you like to gamble it will serve its purpose but don’t expect any of the extras you would normally find in Casinos. There are limited food options, in fact all they have is a food court. There is no nightlife and no one ever sitting at the bar. You would be better off to try out some local establishments for both food and nightlife.
Where to eat. Doyle’s Restaurant and Tiki Bar The food here was excellent and better yet was the outside bar area. Murphy Chophouse is another fantastic option. They also have great food and atmosphere.
Expect to see both locals and visitors to the area. The main route through the area is highway 74. One thing you will notice and you need to be aware of is the large amount of motorcycle riders also taking in the breathtaking scenery. The roads are winding and several blind curves. Share the road safely and be cautious for motorcycle riders. You’ll also see many cars pulled off along the road to look at the views or getting ready to get in the river for some fun. I hope if you get a chance to visit this area you’ll love it as much as Steve and I do. Happy Travels.
