After decades of failed attempts to quit smoking, I found a technique that was created out of shear desperation. I’m quitting smoking one vlog at a time. Yes, you read this correctly. I’m vlogging my way to a smoke free life. Let me highlight what I am doing and why it’s working for me.
My addiction to cigarettes started at the tender age of twelve. As a child, I began this nasty habit as a way of fitting in; never intending that I would be a committed smoker for the rest of my life. No one ever intends on being a life long smoker. But once you are hooked on nicotine, you find yourself trapped in the misery of constantly trying to quit.
I tried every way imaginable to quit smoking, but I never succeeded. So began the years of failed attempts and disappointment. Mostly disappointment in myself that I had allowed such a disgusting habit to control my life. It was from this disappointment and hopelessness that I decided to try something completely unexpected. This is where I began to quit smoking one vlog at a time.
What is Vlogging?
Vlogging is a video diary that you can keep for yourself or make public. I use YouTube for vlogging my Quit Smoking diary. Originally I posted everyday in the early stages of my cold turkey quit and now I post every few days.
How I Started?
Steve and I have been watching YouTube videos for several months for tips on quitting smoking. As a result of watching these videos, I found other individuals like myself struggling to stop smoking. I also found experienced professionals with extensive libraries of smoking cessation techniques. Then it hit me.. My world as a blogger is intricately entwined with all forms of social media, so why not use this to my advantage.
Overcoming Hesitations Of A Video Diary.
Prior to quitting smoking one vlog at a time, I had never used social media in the video channel form. I had very little knowledge of this platform and limited equipment. I found myself extremely apprehensive about capturing my image on video. It was initially intimidating for me to even hear the sound of my own voice. I decided to take the mental approach that it would be highly unlikely that my vlog would be viewed often. Resolved to take a chance and risk embarrassment, I decided that nothing was more important then my finding a way to finally quit smoking.
How Vlogging Is Helping Me.
Vlogging is helping me to stay nicotine free for several reasons.
- Vlogging is holding me accountable for my decisions by saying to the world: “I am quitting smoking for good.” It’s funny how saying this to complete strangers online seems to be the key for me. My theory is that I have let so many other people in my life down with failed attempts that I have become immune to their disappointments.
- Quitting smoking one vlog at a time is helping me create a network of others on the same journey as me. I compare it to a nicotine anonymous meeting held in the privacy of my own home. Through my vlog I have connected with other individuals on the same path as me. Watching their videos helps to encourage me; giving me the feeling of community. I have both received encouragement and also provided inspiration to others. It’s important to know going into vlogging that many individuals will choose different paths towards the end goal of quitting smoking. My attempt is strictly a cold turkey approach. Therefore, I tend to reach out to others using the cold turkey method.
- Vlogging has helped me to create a reference to see how far I am progressing in my journey. In the first few days of quitting smoking (cold turkey), I was in physical nicotine withdraw. This was by far the hardest part of my quit. It can be easy to conveniently forget the reasons why you wanted to quit in the first place once you have been removed from the physical withdraw. I cannot count how many times in the past I have quit only to find myself smoking 1 week later. Now if I feel like I’m about to give up, I return to my earlier posts. This helps to give me a reminder that I am only one cigarette away from returning back to my addiction.
- Discovering YouTube Channels providing expert advice and counsel has been a key factor in my current success. One of the main YouTube channels and websites I use is Whyquit.com. I have found such valuable information here. One of the most unexpected benefits that I found by creating a video diary of my journey was the experts that reached out to me. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Joel Spitzer from Whyquit.com. Joel personally reached out to me after posting my cold turkey quitting smoking vlog. I feel like I have had my own personal sponsor. No matter what my journey brings, Joel has a corresponding video to address my concerns. I cannot thank Joel enough for being my quit smoking angel.
As I continue on my journey as a non-smoker, I have decided to expand my accountability into my blog. That’s where this post comes in. What is Kathy Brown finding today? I have found the drive within myself to move forward into a healthy and happier life. Unwilling to accept the notion that I am incapable of change. I realize that the decision I made to smoke at twelve years old does not hold me in chains to a future of darkness and disease. I am stronger than the cigarette. When it comes to smoking I will not care what others perceive of me. I will be quitting smoking one vlog at a time.
