The Schooner Freedom in St. Augustine, Florida is an excursion that should not be missed. This was not our first sail on this beautiful ship and certainly won’t be our last. If you are visiting St. Augustine or even just passing through, make this one of your stops.
The Schooner Freedom has been sailing the waters of St. Augustine since 2001. This is truly a breathtaking cruise and is inexpensive considering all the attention you will receive. From the moment you arrive at the marina and board, you will know this experience is worth every penny. Steve and I found the crew to be personable and knowledgeable about both the ship and the city it sails.
We were among four other couples that sailed the sunset cruise. Everyone was relaxed and enthusiastic about the sail. The cruise itself lasts two hours and ends with a spectacular view of the setting sun over the St. Augustine horizon. Once aboard, the excursion includes complementary drinks. You will have your choice of wine, beer or non alcoholic beverages. The trip begins with the crew asking for volunteers to raise the immense sails that tower above you. Don’t be shy and be sure to lend a hand. It truly gives you a sense of the beauty of this ship. Looking up as the sails rise is an exquisite site to behold.
One thing I noticed was how the crew went out of their way to get to know each couple sailing with them. It created a sense of friendship with both the crew and the other couples sailing with us. Each crew member seemed to split their time amongst each couple. We were able to ask questions and no question was left unanswered. Captain John, Jimmy and Ryan seemed to love being on this tall ship as much as we did. Their love of the water and sailing was evident and I could tell it was from the heart.
The beauty and elegance of this voyage was unmatched by anything else I have ever experienced on the water. Steve and I sat along the comfortable seating and as I rested my head on his chest there was a peacefulness that came over me. We were able to see dolphins jumping out of the water in the distance. Our eyes were either on one another, the calming water or the magnificence of the ship. As a couple this is one of the most romantic ways to take in the beauty of St. Augustine. The grand finale was the sunset. The sunset was perfectly timed and could be seen setting over the Great Cross. The Great Cross is a must see while in St. Augustine. The cross stands 208 feet high and is located at The Mission Nombre De Dios & The Shrine Of Our Lady Of La Leche.
The Schooner Freedom offers several sailing options. We had previously been on the day cruise, so this time decided to sail the sunset cruise. I have noticed on their website that they also offer a full moon cruise once a month. I’m hoping will be lucky enough to visit when there’s a full moon. The cost of the sunset cruise was $50 a person. For an experience such as this one, I found it to be quite reasonable. You can also save an additional $5 a person if you pay cash.
I recommend this trip to everyone. If you do please let me know about your experiences too. The Schooner Freedom is a fantastic way to relax, unwind and be awed at the beauty that surrounds you.
