Where is Dade County, Georgia?

Just south of Chattanooga, Dade County is an easy drive, with the only traffic you’ll face around Chattanooga itself. Once you pass over the Georgia stateline, the drive is smooth, scenic, and peaceful. Dade County is also within driving distance of major cities like Atlanta, Nashville, Birmingham, and Knoxville, making it a convenient escape for a weekend adventure.

Where We Stayed: The Lucky Lure Cabin in Rising Fawn, Georgia

Our stay at The Lucky Lure in Rising Fawn was the highlight of the trip. This lakeside cabin was cozy, private, and a haven for relaxation. The cabin’s rustic charm, paired with all the modern comforts, made it the perfect base to explore the North Georgia mountains. Fishing lovers will especially enjoy it here—you can cast off directly from your private deck!  There are 4 nearby cabins but all were unoccupied during our Fall stay.

Cabin Highlights:

  • Two bedrooms with queen beds
  • One bath, kitchen, living area, and screened porch
  • Outdoor deck with lake access
  • Pet-friendly (our Goldendoodle, Mr. Jax, loved it!)
  • Equipped with fishing gear—just bring your bait!
  • Nearby hiking trails.

Travel Tip: Exiting the cabin, you can turn left or right. A left turn will take you on a smooth drive, while a right turn leads up a steep, single-lane dirt road on Lookout Mountain. If you’re not in the mood for off-roading or don’t have a 4WD, opt for the left turn!

Top Things to Do While Visiting Dade County, GA

1) Hike Cloudland Canyon Falls State Park

Outdoor enthusiasts can’t miss Cloudland Canyon State Park, on the western edge of Lookout Mountain. While we didn’t hike it this time, we’ve enjoyed it before. The park has moderate trails along stunning ridges, and you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of waterfalls and canyons. For an adventurous experience, you can hike down into the canyon or take in the view from above.

2) Explore Downtown Trenton, Georgia

Trenton’s small-town charm and warm hospitality make it a delightful stop. On weekends, the town square often hosts events like craft fairs, so check the community calendar for fun events year-round.

Travel Tip: For breakfast, head to The Corner Coffee Shop. The coffee is exceptional, and the locals are as welcoming as the coffee is hot. If you’re in Trenton for lunch or dinner, Thatcher’s BBQ and Grill is a local favorite.

3) American Legion Military Museum Trenton, Georgia

The American Legion Military Museum, Trenton, GA turned out to be a hidden gem. This place is more than a military museum, it is a place to hear and tell stories.

Like visiting a family member, we sat down with the volunteers ( The Tillys ) and heard about real-life stories.  Learned about local heroes and told our own stories about our father’s military experience.

Not just history lovers will enjoy the Military museum, but anyone who wants to learn about the heroes who have lived among us.

For a truly special meal, make a reservation at The Canyon Grill. Known for its great steaks, seasonal menu, and fresh ingredients, this spot delivers a memorable dining experience.

Travel Tip: Canyon Grill is BYOB. I recommend trying the Rajas appetizer and finishing with the coconut cake—both were phenomenal!

5) Top Adventure Seekers' Activity or Romantic Overlooks:

Did you know that Dade County is well known for hang gliding?  Not only that but adventure-seeking travelers can purchase a tandem jump for beginners.  No experience is necessary, just a thrill-seeking attitude.  Wondering if Steve and I booked this adventure.  Hell No!

Okay so hang gliding isn’t for you either, no worries this is still a place where tourists come for stunning mountain views.  When Steve and I first met 14 years ago, the hang gliding jump point was one of the places he brought me.  Now that’s how a man does romance

6) Rosie Mae's Alpaca Farm & Coffee Shop

Rosie Mae’s Alpaca Farm was one of the activities that landed at the top of my list.  I happened to visit during Rosie Mae’s 2nd anniversary.  We got to visit the adorable alpaca’s, purchase a fancy coffee, and visit the alpaca shop.
