Fort Williams Park is a beautiful coastal park located in Cape Elizabeth Maine. The destination is worth the short drive from Portland. The park is home to several historic sites and attractions, including the iconic Portland Head Light.
Fort Williams Park, USA History:
I encourage you to spend the afternoon exploring the remains of Fort Williams. Fort Williams is a coastal defense battery that was in operation from the late 19th century through World War II. Battery Blair, Battery Keyes, and other structures are open to the public. These attractions offer a fascinating glimpse into the history of the area.
Of course, the star attraction of Fort Williams Park is the Portland Head Light. This stunning lighthouse has been in operation since 1791. To this day the Portland Headlight is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the USA. Tours of the lighthouse and gift shop are open seasonally.
Other attractions within the park include the Goddard Mansion, which was built in 1858. The Goddard Mansion serves as an office and visitor center. The nearby Battery Hobart is now home to an ecology project.
