Generation X, commonly referred to as GenX, is the generation born between the mid-1960s to the early 1980s. We are not like the baby boomers but were raised by them. We’re also not like millennials even though we raised them. Our formative years were a unique blend of neglect, the original water hose drinks, parties in the corn fields, and zero evidence of any of it. I consider us the lucky generation, before computers and instant access to everything. Enough of the history that made us the way we are, hell we lived it. Here are the characteristics Genx is known for:
Generation X is 1965 to 1980
Generation X is fiercely Independent:
Independent: GenXers are known for their independence and self-reliance. They grew up during a time of economic and social upheaval, and as a result, they learned to fend for themselves.
Latchkey kids is a term often used to describe the childhood of those born between 1965 and 1980 when many parents worked outside the home.
A latchkey kid is a term used to describe a child who comes home from school to an empty house and is responsible for taking care of themselves until a parent or caregiver returns from work. The term “latchkey” comes from the idea of a key left under a doormat or hidden somewhere so that the child can let themselves in.
Desire For Purpose:
Entrepreneurial: Many GenXers started their businesses or pursued careers as freelancers or consultants. They are known for their innovation and willingness to take risks.
The desire for purpose: Many GenXers are driven by a desire for meaning and purpose in their work. Starting a business allows them to pursue their passions and create something meaningful.
GenX is responsible for the Internet: Therefore we are Tech- Savvy:
Tech-savvy: GenXers were the first generation to grow up with personal computers and video games. They quickly adapted to new technologies and were early adopters of the Internet.
The attitude of questioning, doubting, or scrutinizing information, claims, or beliefs:
Skeptical: GenXers are often characterized as being skeptical of authority and traditional institutions. They are also known for their skepticism towards big corporations and the government.
Gen Xers tend to value authenticity and independence, which can make them more critical of claims that they perceive as unsubstantiated or biased. Their skepticism can be seen as a way of questioning authority and seeking the truth in a world that they see as complex and often contradictory.
GenX grew up in a more Diverse World than Our Boomer predecessors:
Diversity: GenXers grew up during a time of increasing diversity and cultural change. They are known for their acceptance of diversity and for being more open-minded than previous generations.
The civil rights movement of the 1960s and 70s brought attention to issues of discrimination and inequality and contributed to greater social acceptance of diversity.
I’m Not Working Myself to Death Mindset:
Work-life balance: GenXers value their work-life balance and prioritize their personal lives over their careers. They are known for their desire to have flexible work arrangements and to spend time with their families.
Many witnessed their parents working long hours and sacrificing their personal lives for their careers. This experience has led Gen Xers to prioritize work-life balance and recognize the importance of taking time off work to recharge
Less Dreamer More Realistic Personalities:
Pragmatic: GenXers are often described as pragmatic and realistic. They are known for their practicality and their ability to make decisions based on facts and logic.
Gen Xers saw their parents or grandparents struggle with the fallout of the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal, and other political and social upheavals. These experiences made them skeptical of grand promises and idealistic visions of the future.
We pay our bills:
Financially responsible: Many GenXers grew up during a time of economic uncertainty and learned to be financially responsible from an early age. They are known for their frugality and their tendency to save for the future.
Gen Xers tend to be financially responsible and prioritize paying bills on time and avoiding debt. They have had to navigate challenging economic conditions, including high student loan debt and a competitive job market, which has encouraged them to be more cautious with their finances.
Conclusion: GenX Characteristics 101:
GenXers are a diverse and unique generation that has had a significant impact on society and culture. Though not everyone in GenX will agree or see themselves in all scenarios, I bet you’ll find many to be accurate
